CWC Newsletter March 2025It’s that time of year: Membership Renewals and Sign-Ups!Culture Works Canada is proud to be your go-to national organization supporting cultural workers and workplaces. As an organisation member, you will enjoy exclusive benefits and perks including early-access to SWP applications this April, Respectful Workplaces and The Art of Managing Your Career presentations and personalized accompaniment. Our mission remains the same: to empower cultural workers and workplaces with leading insights and solutions to thrive. Your support helps further our advocacy work as the voice for Canada’s cultural labour market. Speaking of advocacy: CWC is building a strong case to propose modifications to current income tax law. These measures would benefit Canadians that work the most. With our survey results, we can confirm that the cultural sector could use some relief! Don’t miss out on the conversation and the opportunity to support this work. Reach out to membership@cwc-coc.ca for any assistance. Members, new and renewing, be on the lookout for a calendar invitation to our Members Meeting on April 4th, 2025.
SurveysCWC is wrapping up the Individual Revenue Survey reports. We are very happy to report this survey has confirmed a fair number of things that were always known anecdotally but are now quantified and proven. Two noteworthy items: - 52% of the cultural workforce has 2 or more cultural revenue streams (e.g., artist and administrator, artist and teacher, etc.) the vast majority of whom have numerous job titles within each of the various revenue streams.
- 1 in 4 work more than 37.5 hours/week, the majority of whom also volunteer an average of 200 hours per year.
CWC would also like to encourage all organizations to participate in the Charity Village compensation study. Feel free to download the 2024 report or consult their information page.
InternshipsCWC is preparing to open Student Work Placement program applications next month. Organisation members will have access to apply for the SWP wage subsidies as of April 8, 2025. IDEA RoundtableOn February 12th, CWC held a panel-style pension planning discussion. Several experts were present to share details on retirement planning, and strategies we can all employ. The 90-minute discussion focused on providing information on financial resources, and programs available to cultural workers preparing for their post-career life. Thank you to our panelists Paul Constable, Ruby Olele, Nancy Morgan and Nissrine Shuman for sharing your time and information. To view the recorded discussion, click here. CWC On the Road2025 proved to be a great start for CWC. With visits to Toronto, Ottawa and Kingston, we conducted monitoring for SWP and YCW program recipients, as well as a presentation of The Art of Managing Your Career hosted by Work In Culture. We got the pleasure of meeting amazing employers, staff, and students that are actively working on furthering the sector. Thank you to University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, Kingston Theatre Alliance, Single Thread Theatre Company, InterAccess for your amazing hospitality! On January 16th, CWC was invited to participate in a panel-style event with the Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology. The session covered key topics for emerging and seasoned professionals, including taxes, personal branding and setting career goals. Thank you to all the panelists and CITT for this engaging discussion! Looking for leadership support and resources? Join Professional Association of Canadian Theatres on March 26th for their next New Leaders Roundtable, a monthly series curated to support theatre workers through guest speakers, resource sharing, and peer to peer support. CWC’s very own Gregoire Gagnon will be there to share a 20-minute presentation on HR best practices, and take questions from attendees. Register for the free, virtual event here!
